That's me too.. A dictionary is a nice reference to have, but I really can't imagine needing it much given my reading material.

I read a lot of late 1800s, early 1900s stuff, but those authors DO send you to a dictionary. And this 1913 edition is from the same period and very complete.

Are you sure you want to do this? Even the zip file is huge. http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/29765

The text reader on the JBL formats TXT files based on some preset rules. I don't think you can do anything that changes that. How about RTF? I haven't tried that format myself, maybe the formating is less.

kmrowley- RTFs come out exactly the same.

I know this is off topic, but if you read something like Joseph Conrad's "Mirror of the Sea" http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/1058 you'll never go back. These guys were writing just before radio and TV, and they can put you there with words. But like I say, you will occasionally need a dictionary.

Even if I could get a font into a book jetBook Lite will strip it out. If one of the more expensive readers ever allow me to plug in my own font I may decide to spend more money.

If you want a book reader that lets you use any font you want, you're prety much limited to one - and it's not a new, or expensive, one. It's the eBookwise 1150 available at ebookwise.com

It's a sister site of Fictionwise and it's for sale for $99.95 including a memory card. It supports it's own format and the library software will convert Word, txt, rtf, and html. You can download any TrueType font to it. It also has a backlight (controllable) so you can read in bed, dictionary, search, active links, touch screen (w/ soft keyboard), and about a weeks worth of reading on one charge. The battery makes a perfect ergonomic grip. The screen can be rotated to all four directions. You can get DRMed books at ebookwise.com and multiformat at fictionwise.com and anywhere else you can get files in formats the library software supports (webscription.net is a good source for new Baen books).

Both Fictionwise.com and Ereader.com still have a link to it on their front pages. Just select Reading Devices and Bob's your uncle.

I checked the Dictionary and there is absolutely no formatting so it is the JBL that messes things up. Converting to one of the other formats might be better. Give me some time and I can grab part of it and convert it to all available formats. and load them. All of the default files on the JBL are FB2.

thanks for the link - I snagged it and will check it out (always looking for something interesting to read). But, with Project Gutenberg books I go for the html versions, not sure the dictionary function works for that format.

Thanks to larryh for verifying that the text was clean and that it is the JBL doing this. I cannot tell you how many people have told me that there must be other stuff in the text file, and I just don't know how to find it.

I have an ebookwise 1150 and I'll have to admit it is a very refined machine in many ways. My objections to it are that it is too bulky to pocket, and I do not like the backlit screen as much as a good reflectance screen. It seems you are always fiddling with the screen settings because the text saturation changes as the machine warms up or if you move to an area where the ambient light is different. But it is a masterpiece of ergonomic design- you do not even notice the extra weight and it looks like it is built to Mil Specs- very sturdy with real rubber port covers and hand grip.

I am more than happy to be able to help and the speed I have the size doesn't matter.

The ebookwise 1150 looks good, but I just got the JBL for Christmas and I don't think I will be buying anything else anytime soon. I am on disability and have to be careful with my money. I might still get it if I get some computer work and make some money.

I don't mind answering any computer question on the forum either.

If you are interested in the Ebookwise 1150 (or the RCA REB 1100 same as 1150 but with better screen) for a lower price, they are often available on ebay for less in various conditions. There's one seller that frequently is selling new ebookwises.

Yeah if they would come out with a new version of ebookwise with color or really just one that would take a 2 gig sd card vice the smartmedia card I would buy it in a heartbeat. I have had my 1150 for years and its been VERY reliable. I was hoping the jbl would be an updated ebookwise but mine refusing to boot after only 2 months was a real bummer. Its replaced but how long before it does it again?

After checking the dictionary out I thought about using it but the size makes it very slow. I split it into a different file for each letter. If anyone wants them they can email me at larry@hartfield.net and I will send the zip files. IT makes 2 files zip just under 5MB each which is the limit for a lot of ISPs. It makes word look up more than 10 times faster on the JBL. The largest file is still over 3MB which takes quite a while to load but it is much better than the original 28MB. I left it is plain text and you can format as you wish.
