I presently use a Partner 850 with C-Pen to scan in text and translate text between Russian and English. However, I'd like to translate longer passages faster and would like to use my PC.

Here's the workflow I envision:
1. Scan document to *.tif file. I already have a scanner that can do this.
2. Use OCR to generate letters and words.
3. Translate the letters and words.

Is software available to do steps 2 and 3? In fact, what are the input and output formats of Lingvosoft routines?

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the message. So you have a scanner which can scan a document to a TIF file.

You need something with OCR for the Russian language? Then Translate these Russian letters and words into English?

Is that correct?

Yes, Jerry, that is correct. I suppose I also need OCR for the English language.

Hi Dan,

Ok perfect. The C-Pen 3.5 can scan and upload Russian text into your PC, Tablet or Smartphone. Once the Russian text is there, you can use one of out 'Text Translator' applications to take that Russian text and convert it into another language. Below i have posted links to the items you would need (assuming you are using it with a windows PC)

C-Pen 3.5 https://www.ectaco.com/bluetooth-cpen/
Russian Text Translation software: https://www.ectaco.com/LingvoSoft-Talking-Translator-English-Russian-for-Windows/

If you decide to purchase these items let me know and i can see if i can get you a bundled discount. My email is jery@ectaco.com

The C-Pen 3.5 is an interesting idea, but I was hoping to use my flatbed scanner. Please tell me what I would need to use a flatbed scanner with *.tif output. I know that it would need LingvoSoft-Talking-Translator-English-Russian-for-Windows.

What is the format of the text the C-Pen 3.5 produces on the computer?

Hey,

The C-Pen instantly imports a line of text into a document or anywhere the cursor is. You can import text into excel, a Google search, a word document or more.

If your current hardware (Scanner) does not support Russian OCR you would need something that does.

Hope this helps!

FYI, The following combination works: Abbyy FineReader 11, an OCR routine, and Lingvosoft Talking Translator. Free online translators Google Translate, Bing (Yahoo Babel Fish) and PROMT also look good.

Hey,

Yes but as the old adage says, you get what you pay for. The Lingvosoft translator for Russian is Rated at 96% accuracy. Free ones are far lower. If you are trying to translate anything professional i highly recommend not going with one of the free online translators.

How about C-Pen 20 English <-> Russian Handheld Translator and scanner https://www.ectaco.com/C-Pen-English-Russian-Deluxe-Pack/

or

Ectaco Magic Scan English <-> Russian Text Translator and Scanner https://www.ectaco.com/Ectaco-MS-802-RU/ ?

Hey,

Yes the Magic Scan with Translator would definitely be a great option. It can scan multiple lines and it also has the text translator you need! https://www.ectaco.com/Ectaco-MS-802-RU/
