I have a Partner 900. I got a Partner Lux. I got it because of your "20+ years of research" that lead to the Speech to Speech translation. But the truth is that you are using google translate. How does the Partner Lux differ from an Android tablet running your Android software? Maybe I am missing something.

Hi,

Thanks for the message. Discussing the details of our projects and developments would require not only an NDA but the potential for growth and future developments. What i can tell you is that we supply allot of big name companies with software and databases they require to develop and run their linguistic technology.

Moreover we are the only company that makes an android convertible tablet with a physical keyboard. Most linguistic apps that you purchase on a smartphone are tablet are unable to be used without a wi-fi connection. Most linguistic features on the Partner LUX can be used in offline mode including the database driven speech to speech (audio phrasebook), Text translation, Dictionary and Language teacher program. The partner LUX is the only all in one linguistic tool available right now.

Hope this helps!

No argument that it is a cool little device. I had two Partner 900. But the marketing material makes you think that Ectaco developed speech to speech technology. That is not true. The Lux uses google translate. Google translate will run on any Android tablet. If I am lost in Moscow and I want to speak with someone, I have the same options as my Partner 900.

Does the Lux have a GPS? If not, I must also carry my Android tablet with me. If I must carry it anyway, I will use my Android apps on the tablets bigger screen.

Don't get me wrong. It is a nice device. But it does not solve the problem I bought it for.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback. In terms of our vernacular speech to speech translation means you can say something and it can be spoken in another language. This is the 'audio phrasebook' feature we advertised on the partner 900 which is driven by a database on the device locally. On the other hand free speech translation gives you the ability to speak anything you want and have it translated for you. Right now that feature is on the LUX model but as you have seen it is through a Wi-Fi connection, everyone voice is so different completing this task locally would be extremely difficult.

The Partner 900 and the Partner LUX will definitely have overlap. I remember seeing a picture on the 'evolution' and 'innovation' of the iPhone. Realistically it has been the same exact thing since it was released 5 years ago with minor changes to the hardware and software. I find this funny and interesting at the same time!

Yes. I understand. But you are marketing it as a huge advance. The free speech is just a google application. I mean, I am sure google put a giant effort into it. I spend a lot of time with Russians that don't speak English. Passing the partner back and forth and typing is slow. The speech feature would be great. But there is no wifi walking on the street.

It seems to me that you are only missing one piece. There are many phones that have speech to text. If you licensed a speech to text engine and then fed the output to the translation software you already have, it would be a complete solution.

I got the Lux at the discounted price. Still, I am thinking of returning it. I have the 900. I have a tablet. I must carry both. I don't understand what I am gaining with the Lux.

I will tell you that I got a Russian manual and do not know all the features. Does it have a GPS?
If it had a gps, then I could leave the tablet at home.

Again I say, cool little device. If I didn't have a 900, I would chose the Lux over the 900. But I do.

Hey,

The LUX is the first product we have released not only with an android platform, it has the ability to download additional applications on it. Also it is the first with any sort of free speech translation feature alongside offline full sentence typing translation and database driven speech to speech. Comparatively, when looking at all of our other products it is a huge advancement and we are extremely happy with the response on it.

I recommend contacting the technical service for a walk-through or to give you more information on the features and functions. You can call at 718-728-3605 or email support@ectaco.com

Hope this helps!

Yes. I understand the product. It is an Android tablet that has software on it to learn a language. It offers features that your other products do not offer. But my point is being lost. I have a back pack. In that back pack I carry my Partner 900 and my Asus tablet.
The Lux does not give me anything I don't already have with these two devices. I already had Google Translate on my Asus. The speech to speech was developed by Google. I bought the Lux thinking I could do speech to speec without wifi. Your marketing material led me to this conclusion. "the result of 22 years of research".

My earlier point: Ok, it is an Android device. If it had a GPS I could leave my Asus tablet in the hotel room. I have no argument that it is a more general purpose device then the 900. The 900 runs Windows CE, a very out dated operating system. The biggest advantage to the Lux, is if Ectaco offers more (and better) applications in the future that can be loaded on the Lux.
