Hi,
I recently purchased the iTravl NTL-2r English <-> Russian Ultimate Travel Tool. Part No. NTL-2R
While I have read the forum in breif, it seems this model may not have the Main Menu with the Statue Of Liberty, but 4 menu options with the icons options, is this correct? It would be nice if you outlined this in your instructions, which are a bit limited!
Also I have attempted to use the external microphone and earphone function, but no matter what I try and I have tried all 3 accessories that came with the unit, including the one that came with the main unit and the 2 from the bonus accessory kit, I get no sound in the ear peices! It appears the Mic is working as when I tune it in it says it is correct, but for me it is useless to in this form as I intend to give this to my partner to help learn English. What am I am able to do to fix this function?
Also, am I am to speak a common phrase into the unit and have it translate it into the Russian translation though verbal speach or is this only available in the text to speach function?
This for me was a big investment and while I was very happy with the response and delivery of this item, I need it functioning properly to make the purchase worthwhile.
I look forward to your response.
Regards Boyd

Hi Boyd,
Thanks for the question!
The model with the statue of liberty is either an older version or a multilingual model. Here is a link to the newest users manual https://www.ectaco.com/products/materials/1/iTRAVL_UM_ENG_web_new.pdf
First lets try using the device with out any connections, we want to make sure the speech recognition is working properly and the best way to do that is to eliminate the peripherals as a factor.
Here are the directions on how to do a speech to speech translation. https://www.ectaco.com/posts/list/52640.page
If you are trying to communicate something more specific i always recommend using the "text translation" feature.
Let me know how it works out!

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for the response. Yes all features of the unit work when fine when nothing is plugged in. I can speak into it and get the verbal response no problem, it is when I plug in any one of the external mics and earpieces that I get no sound at all. I feel there may be a fault with this part of the unit.
What are my options to have this rectified? I would like to be able to use it with the external mic and earpieces rather than being limited to having only the built in mic and speaker.
I was aware that the unit does have some limitations in that we are restricted to certain predetermine phrases rather that just being able to speak a phrase of my own and it would translate that. I guess I will have to use the text to speech function when I want to do that.
For me this is important as the friend I am meeting shortly has limited English and I was hoping this unit would help with the difficulty this situation will pose to both of us. Your further assistance and advice is greatly appreciated.
Regards Boyd

Hey Boyd,
First we will try a few more troubleshooting options. I remember you said the purchase is recent, if it was within a year the item will be covered under warranty replacement so we can exchange it for a new one for free.
I do want to try 2 more things first. First please try a hard reset of the device. You can follow the instructions here. https://www.ectaco.com/posts/list/52639.page If this does not work we will try one more thing.
Please let me know!

Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your assistance and advice. I did as instructed and the external mic and earpeice function is now working.
I must say I am a little surprised, but it is a good result and I feel the unit will be much more suited to my needs with this working correctly. Now all you guys have to do is create a common talk both ways model that we can speak any phrase in our language and have it repeated in the chosen language. This would be very handy for those of us who want to use it for more than just the predetermine phrases that are currently available. I am sure you are working on it!
Thanks again for your help.
Regards Boyd

Hey Boyd,
Great to hear! We are definitely working on what we call a "Free Speech" translator, where one can say anything and have it translate.
Getting it to our standards is very difficulty. Getting English speech to English text is Hard enough and requires at least 10-15 minutes for the program to "learn" the users voice. (we didnt release anything like this yet because it still has plenty of inaccuracies and it requires Wi-Fi to work properly. Now take into the equation some of hundreds of variables encountered when doing a reverse translation like Spanish back to English. Here are just a few i know of.
-Regional dialects.
-Speech tone
-Speech pitch
-Volume
-Male vs Female
-Slang
The list literally goes on to over 100 things.
I do expect to see free speech someday but i don't know when. Thanks for the feedback!
