Pocket PC installation questions  XML

Hi, I spent nearly $200 on your apps and am about to try them out but have some questions:

- Can all your Pocket PC apps be flexibly installed to main memory (RAM), or internal file store (ROM), or storage card (SD)? Are there any notable exceptions (perhaps certain categories of apps that must always be installed to RAM)?

Above link says this 3rd-party font file is required to view Chinese characters on the PPC, and should be copied to \Windows\Fonts folder (in RAM). That font file is nearly 9MB, do you know of any way that it can be stored on flash ROM store or on SD card?

Hi I've installed some Pocket PC apps including:

ECTACO Talking Partner Dictionary

ECTACO PhraseBook

ECTACO Voice Translator

Afterward I ended up with two extra keyboard input panels (SIP) on my Pocket PC: PD Chinese keyboard and PP Russian keyboard, but I'm not sure which came from which app.

The Chinese keyboard seems to promote itself as the default input method, but it also seems to be causing problems. I noticed after the next soft reset, that the whole SIP input panel is liable to be all messed up if the Chinese keyboard had been loaded once -- afterward no matter which keyboard panel is selected, the whole panel area just displays gibberish bitmap.

Secondly, I don't know why the Russian keyboard was added, and I don't know how to remove it (short of uninstalling the applications)?

By the way, I noticed that both the Chinese Partner Dictionary and Chinese PhraseBook apps can show Chinese characters just fine (one or both of them seem to be using a 3MB ectacofont.ttf font file that was installed along with the apps).

But the Chinese Voice Translator app cannot display Chinese characters unless I manually copy over the 9MB SIMSUN_2_90.TTC collection font file mentioned earlier. Is there a way to make Voice Translator use the same 3MB "ectacofont.ttf" file instead (to save storage space)?

I forgot to mention the Pocket PC I have: i-mate PDA2k (aka HTC Blue Angel, O2 XDA IIs, T-Mobile MDA III, etc) which runs WM2003 SE Phone Edition.

Anyways I managed to remove the LingvoSoft Chinese (and Russian) keyboards, and now my SIP panel is back to normal. At first I tried just disabling them (changing the registry IsSIPInputMethod default key to 0 as shown here), but that still did not fix the SIP garbled display problem. So I ended up deleting those keyboard DLL files (after first unregistering them as shown here with this tool).

Hi,

You may install Pocket PC apps on storage card, but there can occur font troubles. My advice would be to try first. Chinese characters (9 MB) should be installed only to main memory (RAM)

In regard to the posts from 06/03/2005, all the above issues may occur because your device runs on WM2003 SE Phone Edition. Current versions of above apps doesn't support it. Currenly we are upgrading Chinese dictonaries and they will be working on WM2003 SE Phone Edition without any troubles. They will be released in two weeks. You may download it then. Also we are planning to upgrade Chinese phrasebook and Voice Translator for WM2003 SE Phone Edition. So please be in touch.

Regards.

Thanks Kate (and Paul Feo for my registration key problems). I didn't realize your apps don't support Pocket PC 2003 Second Edition yet (or perhaps the incompatibility is with the Phone Edition version?).

Do you recommend I stay with my purchase then? As I recall I spent about $175 recently to buy your apps...

I've been trying just the apps I installed a little bit, they seem to work well enough now, except sometimes afterward it slows down my whole Pocket PC to a crawl even after I exit, until I do a soft reset.

I have one last question -- for each language edition, does the PhraseBook app always share the same language database as the Voice Translator app? In other words that both apps would always have the same set of phrases that it translates?

If this is the case, is the Voice Translator then basically a superset of the PhraseBook (because VT can also do speech recognition) -- so that if I already install VT then I should not even install PB because it would just be a waste of storage space?

Yes, you may use the same language database for these two apps
Just install the shells of VT and phrasebook and any of language bases.

As for the Phone Edition version, all LingvoSoft apps are compatible with it. But if some application specific troubles occur please let us know here in the Forum or email to support@lingvosoft.com

I think you may stay with your purchase. As for "it slows down my whole Pocket PC" this may be caused by large Chinese keyboard. In two weeks the updated keyboard will be available and you will be able to install it. You may send your request to info@lingvosoft.com so we could email new version to you.

Is there an updated dictionary for lingvosoft for Pocket PC 2003. I have an O2 XDA2i unit and whenever I install the chinese keyboard and soft resets, my PDA hangs.
I wld like to evaluate the software since it won an award. But I can't do that until my pda runs normally after the installation.
Help!!!

Hi,

You should wait for 10 minutes after soft reset. If your PDA hangs again, so there is some bug in your devise system.
