The reason I bought the Partner Lux was for the instant Free Speech Translation. However, it appears that this feature works only with an active Internet connection. Why is that not mentioned in the product literature? Is there anyway to put the required software on a MicroSD card? Some of the places I must go will not have Internet access. Is there any way to get this feature to work without Internet access?

Can I install an ECTACO English <-> French microSD card for Partner LUX into an ECTACO Partner LUX English <-> Russian Free Speech Electronic Translator and have the same capabilities for French as I do for Russian? Specifically, the Free Speech Translation, the Full Text Translator with voice output, and the Extensive Talking Dictionary and PhraseBook with human pronunciation?

Hi,

Thanks for the message. Most of the features on the partner LUX including the voice activated phrasebook, the write-anything text translation and language teacher program, picture dictionary, translation dictionary, irregular verbs and more can be operated entirely offline. Some features like the say-anything voice translation do require an internet connection, this information is stated on the description of the product on the website.

Yes, you can get another language SD card for your device. It will give you all the same features as if you purchased the Partner LUX for the other language in the first place.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jerry,

Yes, that helps immensely, thanks! I will buy some additional cards.

Regards the speech translation, can you enlighten me as to why the Internet connection is required? Is it because the software to do the translation is licensed by somebody else (i.e., Google Voice Recognition), is it an issue of a large data base being required (more than the Lux is capable of), or what? Many phones currently have the capability to convert speech to text, are they using the same technology?

Thanks,
Rick

Hey Rick,

That is exactly correct, the most difficult part is accurately taking your voice and changing it from sound to text. The database that does that is massive and cannot be contained on one device. The Text to text part is not as difficult, that is why you are able to do it offline.
