I just got my Jetbook Color. How do I launch the internet browser? I expected an Opera browser as shown on the enlarged image at http://www.ectaco.com/jetBook_Color/. Also, how do I update my device on March 1st as advised on the box sticker? First impressions are good but no user manual in English and software is a bit beta-ish.

As already mentioned: WLAN and Browser do not exist but are part of the product description.

Much worse for me:
1. We have a perfect stylus integrated but no software supporting it.
I expected a functionality to add hand written comments to my PDFs and also a simple notebook app.
The intention to purchase the reader was my job. Electronics engineer. I have to carry around lot of specs and datasheets
and make notices to them and also make notes during conferences.
Other readers with Pen input (like Sony) have these features.

2. Screen blanking:
when the screen is updated I nearly always see shadows of the previous page. It's then sometimes hard to read small fonts.
I know that this quick clearing makes page changes faster and is a good idea in most situations but it it's used an extra shortcut for a full redrawing is a must.

3. Page Margins:
On PDF reading a zoom functionality which removes page margins has to be present without saying for such a reader.

4. Percentage Zoom:
when zooming into a part of a page, a page change with same zoom settings should be possible.

5. Screen Rotation:
The reader does not support landscape operation at all.

I hope most of the functionality will follow but can someone from ECTACO confirm that at least hand written comments and note or drawing app will be implemented in the next firmware release? Otherwise I will return my reader immediately.

Thanks for the message. I just checked the project log (basically a list of things being worked on as we speak). The things you mentioned were on the list and will absolutely be modified in the upcoming updates. The March 1st update will fix the most pertinent issues and the April 1st will have the device much near 100% working capacity.

We are listing to every last little piece of feedback from customers and are tacking everything into consideration. Like our last devices (JB-5 and JBL) we will continue to make firmware updates for the life of the unit until as many people are satisfied as possible.

That would be great, i remember we had a bunch of testers for older JB models. After we take care of the pending 'bugs' and issues we will then move on to other improvements and additions via customer recommendations.

One of the best indicators of a wise early adoption, can be the amount of unrealized potential
that a new gadget has. In this case we also have some real evidence that the device is really
functional, and not "vapor ware".

Ectaco's history of firmware updates is a good one for the jetBooks.

I imagine that the priorities for the software team would have servicing the requests of the school systems
involved in the Russian trial program ahead of the effort to mainstream the "Educational eReader". That's
not to say that there will or should be a lengthy delay in the conversion to a more general purpose eReader,
just that it might take longer than we would like. Part of being an early adopter is that some of these sort
of startup pains are to be expected. (This is my own opinion and I do not speak for Ectaco, I'm just a jetBook
user.)

I'm sorry if you feel we are not being truthful to you. While i cant disclose sales numbers i can tell you that 300 is an extreme underestimation. We have a few school contracts for these devices and well as sales to a number of corporate clients.

As a previous poster mentioned one of our customer over on mobileread already received the update.

review of his new jetBook Color with pictures and everything. It would not surprise, or
upset me in anyway, if he were one to be among the first to get the update. I would

I have heard that a download from the Ectaco site is planned for after the initial emailed
updates have been completed.

I fully expect that the firmware is not in a state where Ectaco considers it "finished", nor
well it likely be so for a few more updates to come. If they go through the same number
of updates as the jetBook Lite, and end up with as good a result, I would consider that a
job well done.

As for missing "promised" release dates, you should be using your Mirasol ereader by
now, shouldn't you? Not to mention practically every PC game I ever heard of.

release of the device, is causing for those who have the device. The other option would
have been that Ectaco have not released the device outside of the academic circles.

I expect that Ectaco will continue the firmware development at least until it functions up
to the product description. For the earlier jetBooks the development of the firmware
continued a little past that point and included adopting more current/advanced reading
software. The functional capabilities of the devices were expanded beyond what was in
the initial product description.

I fully hope and expect that there will be independent developers/hackers, such as those
at "xda-developers" that will take advantage of all the info that "Freescale" has made
available for device firmware development for devices using their MX508 processor.
If not for this device alone, then for the Kindle Touch and others that make use of the
same underlying structure.

Perhaps Ectaco should have held onto the device and not released it to the general
public until they had completed the transition to a more general purpose ereader.

I certainly don't feel I've lost my money. Yes the screen is darker than I expected, and yes it's slower than I expected, but it makes a great reader for colour comics, and in good light is fine for all sorts of large (a4) technical type documents.

Can someone explain to my why people think Ectaco is a Russian company? I can tell you closer to the conception of our company the persons who ran it saw a HUGE opportunity selling electronic dictionaries and translators to Russian immigrants (some of which still own and use the very first product we sold over 20 years ago).

I know its difficult for some customers to believe but every single piece of feedback we get i submit to management. Last Friday i submitted a message to management about sending a courtesy email to all customers based on feedback on our forums.

I just downloaded your book onto my unit and it seems to work OK. I circled some words and underlined a few things. Then hit the back button to resume normal viewing mode and the annotations were kept in the proper area.

It seems like you may need to update to the latest version.

I have made a little research of how rgb colours are rendered. [url=http://zapodaj.net/3af8e8aa1508.png.html]Here[/url] you can find the results. Bottom 3 in the right column are 3 basic rgb colours. You can see that red is created by overlaying everything apart from red pixels with black. The same applies to blue. Only blue pixels are not overlaid. Green seems to be an exception here. The white spaces between colour pixels are not overlaid with black. I think this is why pictures that have a lot of green in them look so grey.

Thanks for the message, this is highly unusual i don't have an explanation for it. I did write to the people in the tech team to get their take on it.

I recommend one of three things.
1) You can re-download the newest firmware version, it is possibly their was an error writing the file to the device.
2) You can send the item back and we can replace it with a brand new one under warranty (we will also have to analyze yours).
3) You can wait for another firmware revision, it should be released in the beginning of April so its not too far away.

Hi,

I can reproduce the same behaviour on my reader.
It seems that the scrolling information is not included in the stored data.
It seems that the data is just stored relative to the screen and shown from the upper left corner after zooming out.

By the way it's not user friendly to have to unzoom and zoom again to switch the stylus between erasing and drawing because of having to use the menu.
The menu drawing also costs a long time. If I want to take notes during conference or someone else during school lesson the event to write down is already far history before I have selected the drawing mode.
Please add some sidebar for stylus mode selection (Erase, Draw, Colour, Zoom area, etc).

What I find annoying is the massive pause in between each chunk of text. It seems to highlight a chunk on screen (a sentence?), read that chunk fluently, clear the hilighting, highlight the next chunk and read that, and so on. Because it takes it so long to clear the highlight and draw the next one you get big gaps which break up the flow of the reading.

Thanks for the message, its hard to hear on my PC even with the volume turned all the way up. I could make out a 'skipping' of sorts, almost sounded like when a cell phone starts loosing reception.

I was told the reset should fix this issue for you. Also that is should be solved in the next update.

And if you read that blog we still don't get the functionality we paid for.
When I ordered the device I trusted the functionality description and there was no word that the software is not finished!

They still state on the sales website that a browser is shipped. It's still not true and It seems that we will get it limited to some websites.

I have been meaning to post here but have been super busy testing the update and working with development to make it just right.

They were ready to release it on Monday however i held it back because of a few issues i noticed. I believe we will be receiving the finalized version within 24 to 48 hours. It will be posted right on the website www.jetbook.net so everyone can just go on and download it.

Thanks for the message! While the current versions of the jetBook Color come in English-Spanish and English-Russian we do have plans to incorporate other languages in the future. German would almost definitely be one of them. ( i hope this answers 1 and 2)

After a word is translated all you have to do is press the back key (reverse arrow) and it will bring you back exactly where you started.

The color cannot be switched off however if you are reading a book in black and white or color the resolution should be the same. In fact i saw a really good comparison of 2 devices here on mobile read http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167778

Seems to have been a false alarm, but very peculiar behaviour. Just tried once more 10 hours later and now the blue light came on but no screen activity. After a few resets the screen came on and battery showed 20%. Switched off and charged overnight and now it is working fine. Seems
1. Battery drains suddenly or the indicator is not correct 2. When battery low connecting to external power doesn't let the device to be switched on 3. This is still a mystery to me - explanations please: If the device which wasn't working, when switched on 10 hours later started showing signs of life.

Just want to mention, that my update process is not working (OS Version 43).
Its not possible to update the OS Version.
The device just shows a progress bar, for a short time and the device starts normally.


Seems to me not idiot-proofed...
Maybe i try it after charging it to 100%, nevertheless its not clear why it does
not work.

I cant update the JBC, i started the OS update (43->49) after a while there stood "update done" and nothing happend.
Half an hour later i manually reseted the device.
And now there is just a "starting" and the ectaco label on the screen -> nothing else happens.
The device is "hanging around".

How can i fix it?
Can i reset it to factory default?

I was wondering if it's possible to add a feature for viewing images where it scales the image to fit the screen?

When viewing images, if they are too small I can either zoom in, but then I have to zoom again with the next image, and again with the one after that etc... or resize them before I upload them to the JB Color. I believe that it is a result of how Adobe Reader Mobile performs the reformatting of the pages to fit displays
that are smaller than the original/"official" page. It provides a display of where the "official" page would
break, when pages would have to be displayed over more than one page. That way a page number mentioned
in the text can be properly located.

I don't know of a setting to have the reader not add those numbers, but you would expect Adobe to have thought
to include one. If they have, then it would be up to the implementation of the reader to include that as an option.

Generally the hardware diagnostic toolset, if provided at all, is something provided by the hardware manufacturer to
a value adding vendor like Ectaco. In that case, like with the JBL, there may also be provided a launcher for all or
some of the utilities/routines included in the toolset. The JBC hardware is made by Hanvon; the JBL hardware is
made by a different Chinese company (Dr Yi ).

Often, especially in the case of a System On a Chip (SOC), the chip maker provides what is called a "Reference
Design" detailing the basic board level construction and operating system support. Part of that usually includes a
a Software Development Kit (SDK), which then includes most of a diagnostic toolset, with or without a launcher
interface (usually without). You might Google "freescale iMX508".

To provide full disclosure I should mention that I am going by the information and specs that I have seen for the
JBC, I don't actually have one myself (yet).

He explained calm and clearly that i should talk with Fedex and clear things up. Picked up Skype, called Fedex US support number, reached the persons in charge of this package and explained what is in the package. The lady was looking for an FCC code of product, i am not aware of it. Currently package is still in Memphis with status "International shipment release". I interpret this as customs cleared, probably would reach NY in some 24h. Abe, Jerry and local and remote fedex people were very helpful.

Since the last update I have found that the JBC hangs up more often and I have to use the reset button regularly. This is the warranty replacement for my first JBC and I am anxious that the firmware or operating system might be corrupted eventually. I am not confident in the reliability of the system as it stands. I get "critical fbreader errors" aswell.

The battery life is nowhere near 10,000 page turns with the wi-fi off. The usb connection is intermittent - a hit and miss affair that requires multiple re-insertions.

Finally, how can ectaco continue to advertise the JBC as having a web browser when no such thing exists and no one has been told when it is to be implemented? Please escalate this issue to your manager if you have no answer.

Looking back on your posts here, it would appear that you may be looking for something
other than the eReader that the JBC is. I know of no e-Ink display device that performs
well, or even acceptably, as a device to surf the web or as a multimedia device.

I would be happy with a simple browser. Obviously I wasn't expecting flashplayer. I was expecting opera like I mentioned in my original post and as illustrated on the ectaco website. Hey,

If you notice the JBC hanging up or giving an error please let me know the last few functions you performed. Were you exiting a book? Changing font size? Using one of the programs?

Please note, from my understanding the 10K pages is quite accurate and was determined based on certain file type (while im not positive i think they tested it with ePub or TXT).

I know the Wi-Fi currently works on the unit but i have no further information. As always i will do my best to keep you all up to date on current releases.

They had the chance for 2 tries of rework so the situation is clear. As goodwill I asked for a third rework within a certain time.

How about some more facts... I see EVERY complaint about the jetBook Color. I am required to report them myself. I mean complaints on forums, blogs, customer support, tech support...Everything. Right now less then 1% of our customers have complained about not having a browser. You are in that statistic (although I'm not sure you even own one because i don't know who you are).

Also, the return rate on the jetBook color is in the bottom 3 lowest of any device we have sold in 22 years. In other words the percentage of products sold to returned is extremely low.

we had a lot of constructive comments on this board. A lot of feature requests were posted ans also bug reports.
Some of the bugs are fixed now. Nearly no feature request was implemented for the end customer.

We only hear that it might happen in the future but closed user groups have priority.
Because I do not have the features I paid for after 3 month of waiting I requested the device to be taken back.

If we had some statements about timeplans when also the unprivileged customers get the features, the feedback would be better from other participants in the forum.

It's nice that a wishlist is implemented now and I hope users not returning the device will be happy with future updates since the device is still good.

I hope that your co workers in the sales department know about german law well enough to handle the returning fair for all sides.

The update you have is the latest. No need for upgrades, unless after trying you want to try the Russian firmware.

The JBC does not have my native language installed neither, though anyone in The Netherlands, or Belgium, or Germany can buy it, but it is not made for these languages.
Anyone buying the device should know that.

The menu structure does support some form of Chinese, meaning you can still browse through the device using one of the following languages:
English, Russian, I think Yugoslavian (but forgive me it's quite hard to read), German, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, French, Czechs, Polish, and Chinese.

Perhaps after changing the device's menu structure it will be able to read the books.
If they are DRM protected,chances are they don't display on your JBC.

The device is mainly based on Latin lettertypes. They also have added letters outside of the alphabet to support the russian/polish/Czechs/... languages.

As far as Chinese ebooks go, I can not say how they work. However, best is to download some Japanese, Chinese, and some other similar lettertype books, download preferably the PDF files first, then Epub.

You also said you took the battery out so you must have taken the jetbook apart.

What I mean is I can't reset anymore whether using the stylus provided or paper clip. And I can see the button itself have been push into the hole a bit but not broken off. I read somewhere that paper clip can't be used to reset the jetbook.

I forget to shutdown the Jetbook for 4 days and when I tried to use it just didn't respond to whatever button including the reset button. So, after thingking for three days, I don't have choice, found out the guidance from a rusia forum to open the back cover, open the battery and reinstall it back.

Somehow, I manage to update the os just using the on button. It read the microsd during startup. But not sure about the about the firmware because I never success to update it. I hope the team can get workaround for those who have the reset button broken.

I'm not sure, but I think that holding the power button for 5 seconds, will give you the same results.
The only thing the JBC needs to do is reboot, in order to reinstall the files.
So reset is the most logical way, the power button should do about the same function; though I can't say for sure if it will do exactly the same thing.

I work in University in Spain. I bought a JBC on May 1st. This unit arrived with the battery damaged. It run out in less than of a day. After having problems in order to send the unit back with FedEx (I had to drive 200 km in order to send the unit from a FedEx office in Valencia) , a new brand unit was delivered to me on May 30th. When pick up the unit and I tested it just unwrapped from the box I noticed that the software does not respond when I tap with the stylus on the screen. The software detects that I remove the stylus from the socket, and also the blue light turns on when I tap with the stylus on the screen but the software does not respond. The engineering deparment of Ectaco is working on that without results since then, and I have not idea about how I can fix this problem.

I am a little disapointed with this product that has not been working correctly since the University bought it two months ago. Anybody had the same problem with the stylus? I tried to restart, reset and all these things without results. Only once I restarted the device the stylus began to work correctly, but that was only for a few minutes. After that, the problem appeared again and I cant use the stylus. A lot of functions are only available with it and at the moment I can't use the device with its fully capability.

I work in University in Spain. I bought a JBC on May 1st. This unit arrived with the battery damaged. It run out in less than of a day. After having problems in order to send the unit back with FedEx (I had to drive 200 km in order to send the unit from a FedEx office in Valencia) , a new brand unit was delivered to me on May 30th. When pick up the unit and I tested it just unwrapped from the box I noticed that the software does not respond when I tap with the stylus on the screen. The software detects that I remove the stylus from the socket, and also the blue light turns on when I tap with the stylus on the screen but the software does not respond. The engineering deparment of Ectaco is working on that without results since then, and I have not idea about how I can fix this problem.

I am a little disapointed with this product that has not been working correctly since the University bought it two months ago. Anybody had the same problem with the stylus? I tried to restart, reset and all these things without results. Only once I restarted the device the stylus began to work correctly, but that was only for a few minutes. After that, the problem appeared again and I cant use the stylus. A lot of functions are only available with it and at the moment I can't use the device with its fully capability.

yes I can see the wireless connection and when I try to connect after enter the password it gives me the message "connection failed" I already change the password imagining that was the problem and it still giving me the same response.

Thanks for the message. Ok so the devices sees the network which is a good thing. Lets try to rule a few more things out of the equation.

1) Is is possible you can shut the router password off temporarily and try to connect (do this at your own discretion).
2) Also , if you or a friend has another router can you try to connect to that?

I´ve updatet my JBC to the newest russian FW, but I still got a problem with the zoom mode if I read my pdf files.
When I change to zoom mode ( 80, 100 or 120% , it doesn´t matter ), it is not possible to go to the next page without going back to normal zoom mode.
thats not very funny, because it interrupts the way of reading.
The same thing happens in landscape mode.
So, if you want to read your books in landscape, because you want larger characters, it is not possible without entering the menu if you want to jump to the next page.

Hope someone can teach me how to solve this,

Thanks for the message, i just responded to your email also! When you annotate it will stay in your PDF until you hit the erase button.

Right now the JBC does not have a traditional browser for going online. It does have Wi-Fi and a new program called Atom Pub. You can put books on your network and download them wirelessly. The purpose of this is more for schools who have a few hundred jetBooks and have to add the same book to all of them.

Sorry bother you again, but these bugs really annoy when I marked a sentence from a textbook for summary, then I checked Show Summary to see what I have marked, one syllable, sometimes two syllables were omitted, and two words were combined together frequently. In fact, I marked a sentence, "knowledge management system can use your company's intranet as its front end, but one should never be mistaken for the other." then when I checked Show Summary, first syllable of knowledge that was "k" was omitted, and "be" and "mistaken" were combined together as "bemistaken". The marked sentence was displayed like this, "[b]nowledge [/b]management system can use your company's intranet as its front end, but one should never [b]bemistaken[/b] for the other". This occurred frequently when I marked sentences for summary. No problem at all. You do have the newest firmware version.

I would recommend to reinstall the firmware, however we are (unofficially) releasing a new one within the next 7-14 days. I would wait until it is released and then install that. It should clear up this issue. When the firmware update is released it will be posted here http://www.jetbook.net/update/jetbookcolor

I ask about the PDF books because sometimes a corrupt book can create an issue, which does not seem like the case here.

I know there were some posts about the jetBook Lite and working around the firmware (because it used Linux). If i remember correct, someone even downloaded android onto the JBL and connected a keyboard or mouse! It would be interesting to see.

Over six months after posting my original question on this thread I finally got an answer with a PM from Jerry a few weeks ago. Since it was a personal message I didn't share this information on the forum. Jerry has since posted this information on the "web browser for the jetbook color" thread on this forum.

The facts are:

There was a web browser for the jetbook color but it was taken off just before the product was released.
There were security issues with it which were unacceptable to large public school and military clients.

I think that it is reasonable to assume that once a security risk is identified and removed that even more stringent checks and standards would be put in place to approve any replacement browser.

My personal opinion is that these public clients would probably prefer the almost closed system that the Jetbook Color is and we are all now stuck with our crippled color ebook readers which are good for reading in the sun and little else.

That's interesting, you are correct. I tried the file and it does not work. (only shows text). Also, i tried to save it as an optimized PDF from my PC and received the error message 'The PDF Document contained image masks that were not down-sampled."

As a work around i saved it as a JPG and it worked OK.

My JBC has hung - won't reset and won't power down. It's stuck in the main menu and the stylus icon is red x'd whether the stylus is in it's holder or not.

I'm not paying shipping again from Ireland to the USA for another replacement.

Wait for the battery to drain completely. Remove any micro SD card inside. Plug it into a power source and hit reset.

If that does not work you can try to reload the firmware.
