Delete Corrupted Folders and Files

I transferred all of my books from the jetBook's hard drive to an SD card. I want to delete everything on the jetBook's own drive except for the Manual.

I have been able to delete most of the folders/files. However there is still one folder which cannot be deleted either by a Windows XP machine or a Ubuntu machine.

The folder has somehow renamed itself < 553741206 > and there is now no file contained within it.

This folder is in the number 2 position in my Books folder; in the number 1 position is a folder named < . Trash-1000 >. There is nothing contained within that folder either.

Is there some way to permanently delete (or at least hide) these two folders? They are both on the jetBook's own drive, not the SD card's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Lawrence

I tried renaming the corrupted files/folders but was unable to do so. But thanks for your reply. How would I go about reformatting the internal hard drive? I have transferred all of my books (including the one which were pre-installed) onto an SD card so, if I were to reformat the internal drive, there would be nothing lost.

However I do not want to take a chance of ruining the reader. I should hope that a reformatting would be a straightforward process.

Thanks again.

Lawrence

I have done it as a desperate measure and it worked.

Make a note of where you left off in each book first. Remove the SD card and plug in the reader. Right click on it in My Computer, press Properties to see what the filesystem is (I don't remember if it is FAT 16 or FAT 32). From the same location, select format using the same filesystem. After disconnecting, my reader booted fine and ALL the problematic files were gone. I think all system critical files are in the ROM (firmware).

It is at version 0.15d which I think is the latest version.

Even when I plug my jetBook Lite into the computer and I can see what's there on its internal drive, I cannot delete (or do anything else) with that corrupted folder or the "Trash" folder.

It doesn't really make a big difference as I now have all of my books, including the ones which were pre-installed, on my 16 GB SD card. (My wife has her own card).

Nonetheless, I should like to be able to remove this corrupted folder and also the "Trash" folder if possible.

I'm sure there is a way. But I am not a "computer whiz;" I'll need detailed step-by-step instructions as to how to proceed.

Thanks for any help you can give to me.

Lawrence

The .trashxxxx file was generated by linux. It is a file similar to the "Recycle Bin" on windows. The reason it is hard to remove is that it is a linux system file and you need admin authority to remove it (IMO).

I found a similar file when I accessed my e-reader flash mem via "Files and Folders" and selecting the media - "However you have it named".

If you do not delete anything on those drives you will not create the file.

I don't know if you can change system pref to prevent this.

John

Trash folder cont'd.
Note: I did the same thing at first - I copied all the extra docs to an Micro SDHC card (in it's SD adapter) I labled the SD card so that it could easily be identified when the reader was plugged into the PC. I originally did the re-org via XP and did not get the Trash folder.

Later when doing some clean up work on the SD card (With the unit plugged into the PC) I used Ubuntu (Linux) and that is when it placed a trash folder on the SD card. Do not forget that when you move a file from one folder to another it does a copy first and then a delete of the file. Many new people think that a "Move" is a one step process when in fact it is a macro command.

John

The unit evidently did not upgrade (it was already at v. 0.15d) and that corrupt folder is still there.

These instructions are not as clear as you may think. For example, when inserting the SD card with the firmware upgrade files/folders, should the unit be 'on' or 'off?' (I tried it both ways but neither one worked.) And I ASSUME the three folders should be placed onto the SD card and NOT opened - but am I correct?

I think you should take another look at those instructions and try to rewrite them more clearly and completely. EVERY step, no matter how trivial-seeming, should be clearly mentioned. Remember - you are dealing with idiots (such as me!!).

Is there a way to completely reformat the jetBook Lite? I use a computer with the Ubuntu Linux operating system (v. 10

Re:Delete Corrupted Folders and Files

The JBL made a major change with the 0.16e upgrade, you should at least give it a try.

I am more familiar with windows so I will stick with descriptions based on that OS.
(The jetbooks themselves run under a Linux based OS. A file or folder with a "." in
front of it is hidden when looking at it on a system running Linux.)

The thing is, you can fairly easily reset the JBL to factory settings and install the current
firmware on the device.

Make sure you have a fresh set of batteries in your JBL then:

You should remove any SD card from your JBL and connect the USB cable to backup your
JBL's internal memory, to a folder on your PC's hard drive. There should be a new drive
letter for your JBL's internal memory on your PC now. (If you had an SD card in the JBL,
there would also be a new drive letter for that.)

It is much better to have a USB 2.0 SD/Media Card reader/writer connected to your PC
and work with your SD cards using that, but if all you have is the JBL it is possible
to use it to make your update/repair SD card.

Reformatting the JBL's internal memory to FAT32 is a good idea and running ChkDsk on it
while you have the JBL connected to your PC with the USB cable is a good idea as well.
After the internal memory is cleaned up you would copy the contents you saved earlier
back onto your device.

If you can get passed the logo screen then you should be able to do this:

First if you only have one SD card then you will want to back it up to a folder on your
PC's hard drive.

Format an SD card for use during the update of the firmware. (I still use FAT16 for this
although I understand that FAT32 works as well.) The formatting will insure a clean card
and root directory into which the three update folders go.

Be sure to use a firmware update with all three folders to make the SD card. Insert the
SD card into the JBL.

Make sure the USB cable is not connected at this point.

Then you go to the Diagnostics Menu built into the JBL, it is here that you can do the
#13 - Reflash NOR and the #7 - restore factory defaults

To enter the diagnostics screen:
Reset the device. Then hold down three buttons.
They are: "on/off" "zoom" and "menu".
When you see the jetBook screen let go of "on.off".
Keep holding the "zoom" and "menu" keys until you see a 16 item screen.
It's tricky, so it may take a couple of tries.

Then you can reflash the NOR Memory and restore the JBL to factory defaults.

After that is done reset the JBL.

Now you can update the firmware as you normally would.
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70171

Follow all directions and don't play with any settings you don't understand.

This procedure should fix any firmware related problem. If you have a valid download
of valid firmware and this doesn't fix the problem then it is a hardware issue.

Luck;
Ken

Notice when you have the JBL connected to your PC with the USB cable and have a
drive letter for your internal memory, a right click on that drive letter in "My Computer"
will give you the option to format that "drive".
