problem with turning on jetbook lite

I used jetbook lite for less than three days. Now the device cannot be turn on. It sits on first screen forever and does not response to any keys. I tried reset button, “D” “E” combination, replacing batteries with new ones, the book still display entry screen only and does not even response to “off” button. I also tried to copy back some book from device to computer, but computer stop recognizing jetbook lite as removable storage device.

Back up your books, then reinstall your firmware- it's simple if you follow Ectaco's directions. It wipes out the device files and reinstalls them. I would be very surprised if this does not fix it. The latest is 14n. If you can't find it and find directions, repost and I'll get the links.

Dont, forget after a battery change or reset, you have to hold the power button for 3 seconds to turn it on.

problem with turning on jetbook lite

Thank you for your answer ronouel.
That is what I did:
1.	Got firmware from ftp://custftp:FQSswyvGQ20So@ftp.ectaco.com/Lite_0.14n.exe
2.	Run Lite_0.14n.exe on my laptop. It created folder named ‘firmware’ with single file jetBook-Lite-v0.14n.bin in it.
3.	Copied firmware’ folder to SD card.
4.	Placed the SD card into jetBook lite SD slot.
5.	Press and hold the On button and right arrow key
simultaneously until the jetBook logo appears on the screen.
6.	Then actually nothing happened. jetBook logo screen stayed unchanged. There is no indication that update process is started. Does this looks like right procedure? Do I need to create Data and reflash_nor folders on SD card manually (I think it is not necessary)? What has to be on SD card root: ‘firmware’ folder or jetBook-Lite-v0.14n.bin file? Any advice is highly appreciated.

I just updated my JBL today using the Lite_0.14n.exe file. When I ran it on my computer it created three folders;

Data
Firmware
reflash_nor

Also - I did a reset before I did the update and another one after... When you first start the update there is a message screen that comes up and you have to choose either OK to start the process or the return arrow to cancel.

problem with turning on jetbook lite

Thank you, kmrowley.

Yes running Lite_0.14n.exe create Data, Firmware and reflash_nor folder. Problem is that JBL stuck on logo screen and do not proceed to a message screen. Another problem is that I start getting "USB Device not Recognized" message when attempt to connect JBL to my computer.

I think this question has to be answered by ECTACO support team, but it looks like they do not provide 24 by 7 support, so probably someone from JBL users had similar issues and find solutions already.

Also, there may be a problem if you are loading up the SD card while it is in the unit (you said USB device not recognized). Do you have a usb card reader? Take the card out of the book reader, put it in the USB reader, right click in MyComputer and format the card to FAT (not FAT32). Now load on the 3 firmware folders. Now reset the ebook, put the card in use the buttons as follows.

When they tell you to hold 2 buttons simultaneously, it can't REALLY be done, you will always press one button a milisecond before the other one. I had a similar problem, but then I pressed and held Power first, then immediately pressed and held the right arrow, and held both.

If that works and the update loads after the prompt screen where you must press OK, you shut down with the reset button, not the power button.

Thank you for your advices.

I don’t think the fact that JBL freezes on logo screen has something to do with firmware update. Yes, I tried to install updates, but just to see if JBL can start from SD card.

As I said JBL was used less than three days, probably for 5 hours totally. After that it stuck on first screen and become unavailable for browsing through USB. It is frustrated, but what really surprised me was the fact that there is not response from ECTACO.

There is a number listed in one of the other threads.

Me, I'm taking all the issues there are with this JBL unit in stride - it was the cheapest unit I found on the market, so I imagined that there might be some issues with it. Personally I’m amazed at how responsive this company has been in working on and putting out firmware patches.
