Ereader DRM on Jetbook Lite

Dear Ectaco,

It's wonderful that the JBL reads Ereader DRM files. What's _NOT_ so wonderful is that you have to enter the unlock information everytime you open a book for the first time. This is extremely annoying.

Every other device that reads Ereader DRM files asks you for the unlock code for a book and when you open subsequent book requiring the same unlock information, it uses the information saved from the previous book so you don't have to reenter the information over and over again as you open new books.

This behavior is unacceptable and needs to be addressed ASAP in a firmware update.

Thank you,
Panagiotis

PS If this is to be implemented, what time frame would we be looking for this to appear? If it is not going to be soon, I am going to have to return the device during the return period. For me, the device is unusable as it currently is.

Many devices read DRMed pdb files - Palm OS, Windows Mobile/Pocket PC, Blackberry, iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac OS, the B&N Nook, the Foxit eSlick. I'm sure there's more, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

That versatility is one of the main reasons I like the pdb format - I can read it anywhere on anything. The DRM itself is also one of the attractive features. It's just my name and credit card number. That means I don't have to rely on a central licensing site (that might disappear tomorrow!) to unlock a book - once I download it, I load it where I want, type in the info and off I go. For publishers, this method is also good at anti-piracy - who's going to give their credit card number to anyone else? It also helps that it is such a mature, well featured, and stable format.

Panagiotis

I've been regretting the fact that most purchased over the years were DRM locked and was celebrating the fact that the JBL was advertizing that they could read the books. Up until recently, I've been reading most of my books on my iPhone.

Unfortunately I'm in Canada so I'll have to wait until the Nook is made available here or my next trip south of the border to get one. In the meantime, it would mean going back to my iPhone to read my books.

I'm definitely willing to wait if the JBL team is working on fixing these issues, but if they're not then I'll be forced to return the books. Since I'm quickly becoming a fan of the JBL reader, I'd really hate to have to return it.

One of the reason I didn't go with any of the "phone" devices as a new reader was that I wanted something with a bigger screen. I almost went with the nook, but then found this JBL and liked it's cost and that it has just basic set of features (no G3).

Just visted the Foxit eSlick forum - looks like it is undergoing a lot of similar firmware updates too...

My take on these ereaders - it's like the early days of personal computers. Back when there wasn't much standardization... and pretty much nothing worked on multiple systems..

BTW even though the eSlick can read DRMed pdbs, I wouldn't recommend it. I got one through Fictionwise's special and promptly returned it. It is an eink device with a very slow refresh time. To enter the unlock info, you need to use a virtual keyboard. Everytime you press the directional key to move the cursor on the keyboard, you have to wait for the refresh to move to another key. Entering the info for me took over 2 minutes.

After that, the device read pdbs well (keeping in mind the refresh time) as well as pdfs which it was originally designed to read - and handles better than any other device.

Panagiotis
