Jetbook/Jetbook Lite and Barnes & Noble

I see the Jetbook lite supports B&N drm. Will a software upgrade be available for the regular Jetbook? My biggest complaint with the Jetbook is that it cannot read any of the secure formats. So much so I have begun to think of my purchase as a big mistake and researching the purchase of a completely different reader that would allow me to read new books.

I have been told for 8 months that there was an upgrade for the product. Today I called about the upgrade and was told that it might be here next month. A week ago I was told this week. I would sure like to not get run around any more.

This isn't exactly step by step, but this is how you can do it: I did install the B&N reader for PC. This allows you to see your library on your PC once you've purchased the book. After you buy a book, you will receive an email about it, but the ebook immediately appears in your bookshelf at the B&N site. Pick out the book that you want to download and click download. The book will download and appear in the My B&N Books in your my documents folder. You can also download the book from you library on the PC reader software. Once it is downloaded to the My B&N Books folder, connect your Jetbook Lite to your computer and copy your book to wherever you want the book to reside on the device

PLEASE BE AWARE that at this point only PDB files from B&N can be opened on the JBL and even those don't read properly as they have text missing on the bottom of the page. Firmware to correct this problem is expected at any time. I hope this was helpful.

For those following my issue, I found out a few things this morning in speaking with tech support at Ectaco.

First, a new patch; 14o, should be coming out next week. This patch will hopefully and finally address the missing text and line of DRM, PDM files.

Second, ePub readability only applies to ePubs acquired outside of commercial sites; not downloaded from B&N or Ereader. Which I found this statement in contradiction to other posts I have seen in this form.
I'm in Canada and I'm waiting for the Jan1st JetBook firmware update. There is another issue for Barnes & Noble if you live outside the US. I was searching their ebook library and noticed that they can't "ship" most of their books outside the US, meaning you cannot download them if you reside in Canada. Here is B&N's response to my email about the subject:

"Because selling eBooks to international customers involves issues
regarding international copyright laws, tariffs, VAT taxes, currency
conversions, etc., only US residents are able to purchase eBooks on the
Barnes & Noble website at this time. Our customers in Canada will be
able to purchase eBooks on our website in the near future."

Another knock against the JetBook for me. I love the machine but downloading torrents or getting free classics is a downer. The sooner Ectaco supports DRM from multiple companies the better.

Somehow I have the feeling that if this was any other household device forgiveness would not come so easy.

Readers Digest version: You (ECTACO) told me the fix would be out this week.
I fully sympathize with everyone who wants to read the latest DRM material while Ectaco seems to be doing much of their development work post-sales (but Microsoft has been doing this for years-no good OS until service pack 2 and maybe never).

But I have to say that there are many people out there who could never justify spending $300 for a book reader due to income limitations or because it puts you in the fully functional Net-Book PC price range.

I think Ectaco set many priorities right- a very good screen, AA batteries with no service headaches down the road, and an initial bias toward public domain (free) books. Like Gutenberg, they are helping to open the minds of a lot of people who might not otherwise have had the opportunity. Take a look at ManyBooks.com's list of 100 books you must read before you die (all free)- a few of those will keep you busy until Ectaco gets this DRM nonsense straightened out. But I do agree it is disappointing.

But I do agree it is disappointing.[/quote]

I agree with everything you wrote. And the above is what I'm doing, I've found about a dozen books on the P.G. site in the html format that I want to read (well, reread - I read many of them back in the days when I was in grade school, we had some really old books in the library of the school I went to). Plus, I've been reading a few of the classics that came with the unit. So I'm good till all the bugs get worked out with the one DRM book format. And if that doesn't happen, well - then I'll worry about finding a replacement, maybe by then some of other brands of ereaders will be working 100% too..

I had the same problem: use the menu button to change from number entry to text entry. You will have to put your name--same as on credit card--then hit ok, then switch menu to numbers, and enter your credit card number using those keys on the right side of the jbl, same way you enter your name. Name entry is slightly more complicated as you must use arrow buttons to select the correct letters, then hit enter. Also make sure you use the space key, I think it is the zero or one button. At least that's how I did it and have downloaded quite a few books from B&N.
