However, they do not appear to be working. I've held down the power button and the right button (tried both the right arrow as well as the next page button, wasn't sure which was the correct one), for five seconds, dozens and dozens of times, both with the device on, and with it off. I've tried re-downloading the upgrade, making sure format on SD card is correct - everything I can think of. My Jetbook just does not seem to like the latest update although I know others have installed fine.

Help! I very much want to upgrade the firmware to use the new file formats.

Jetbook must be on to transfer data from PC.
Once You plug Jetbook in PC, make sure there is picture on the screen of Jetbook connected to PC. Only at this point You may transfer data from PC to Jetbook.

I have not heard if this difficulty before so perhaps it is isolated to your computer. Is it possible to try on some one else's computer?

1) take a sd card and format it (in a HP notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64) in the FAT file system
2) Download the latest firmware from ectaco (35m: today the firmware file exe contains the directory DATA and REFLASH_NOR, the file zip downloaded yesterday doesn't contain these folders).
3) exctract all the folders and copy them in the root of sd card
4) put the cd card into the reader
5) press reset button: the reader switch of very very slowly
6) press in the same time the power button and the right arrow key, in very very several ways: first the power, first the arrow key, in the same time, for a time from 2 second to 2 minutes. I release the buttons when the logo "JETBOOK" appears, some times after some seconds.
7) the reader switch on but is stands blocked in the "JETBOOK" logo page: I wait also an hour if something changes, but the reader stands blocked and it is not swiched off. The only way to "give a kick" to the reader is press the reset button.

I don't know what I can do at this moment: at this moment I can use the reader for 8-9 minutes and after this time, the lcd screen freeze and it's impossible to use anymore, so I hope in the new firmware.

Once you press reset you should wait a few seconds and then press "On/off" and "right arrow" simultaneously. (it seems like you have tried this but just want to make sure they are pressed at the same time).

Please try or let me know the following
-How are the batteries in the JBL? They should be at least half way or it could cause difficulties like this.
-Diagnostic menu: Reset the device. Press and hold 3 buttons (on/off, font zoom and menu button). When you see the "jetBook -Lite" screen release "on/off". Keep your fingers on the "font zoom" and "menu" button until you see a 16# diagnostics screen. Then go to #13 and click reflash NOR. Next go to #7 restore factory default.
- Try the firmware update and the diagnostics menu with NO batteries in instead have the device connected to the PC.

I try to press them also in different times, first one and last the other: some time the first wa the power button and sometimes the firs was the arrow key.Also the green light start to lights and after few seconds switch off.
There is a pc-based software that could format the firmware of the device, without press the two buttons?

Ok so this is a jetBook (regular model). No right now the only way i know to enter the firmware update screen is to press the on/off and right arrow key.

Did you try to get into the diagnostics screen? Press reset. Then hold "on/off", "zoom" and "menu" buttons. When device powers on let go of "on/off". When diagnostics menu appears let go of "zoom" and "menu.

You can try these things but if they do not work it needs to be replaced.
{NOTE: Battery should be fully charged first. NO SD card in the device.}
1) Try to get into the firmware upgrade screen with on/off and right arrow.
2) Try to get into the diagnostics screen. (details on my last post).
3) Try to defrag the unit. Connect to PC. go to "My computer" on your PC. [u]right[/u] click on (f:) removable disc or whatever disk letter the jetBook is on. Then click tools tab. Then "defragment now"
4) Same thing as above but click on "check now" under error checking.

Let me know if any of this works. If not please contact tech support for replacement.

thanks for answer:without sd card, I made a defrag of the memory, but it was a very long operation. Windows doesn't recognize the device for many times, I plug and unplug the usb cable to the pc many times, reset the device and finally the windows explorer mounted the reader disk.
I try to enter in the firmware update menu, but I cannot. I can get into the diagnostic menu, where there are 16 options: display info, lcd, key test, sd card test, ...., wifi test is the last option.
I try lcd (ths screen begins very dark and there are a report like ms-dos, where there are not error message, I think); I try key test and it's all ok, I didn't try anymore.
What kind of test I could try, to be sure that the reader has the hardware ok?

Also did you try checking the JetBook hard drive for errors? Connect to PC. go to "My computer" on your PC. right click on (f:) removable disc or whatever disk letter the jetBook is on. Then click tools tab. Then "check now" under error checking.

This might help but that picture is still making me think this is a hardware problem.
