firmware upgrade help and questions

I'm trying to upgrade my jetbook firmware. I've found the instructions:

http://www.jetbook.net/upgrade.php

However, they do not appear to be working. I've held down the power button and the right button (tried both the right arrow as well as the next page button, wasn't sure which was the correct one), for five seconds, dozens and dozens of times, both with the device on, and with it off. It never does anything besides turn on, or turn off.

Do I have to delete all the other files from my SD card besides the firmware directory?

How can I tell what features are added by a particular firmware? How can I tell if I even need to upgrade?

Are there any plans to upgrade the jetbook to support reading of simple HTML files? Many of the ebooks I have are in that format (for example, all of my Baen Books) and it would be nice to be able to read directly instead of rendering to PDF or stripping down to txt.

Problem with latest firmware update

Despite meticulously following all instructions here, I receive a "firmware update failed" screen when trying to install the latest firmware upgrade JL-04v030e. The Jetbook screen appears first and then the error screen, while I am still holding both the power and the right arrow buttons.

I've tried re-downloading the upgrade, making sure format on SD card is correct - everything I can think of. My Jetbook just does not seem to like the latest update although I know others have installed fine.

Help! I very much want to upgrade the firmware to use the new file formats.
The Jetbook is a tremendous e-book reader and I hope I can resolve this problem soon. Thanks - J.

Hello,
I seem to be having a similar problem. I have downloaded the firmware update and placed the three folders on a fresh SD card. I press the reset button, then power+right as the machine comes on. I see the firmware update screen and press OK. I see the little animation of files being transferred, but about 30 seconds later, I get the error screen.
Firmware Upgrade failed! Hardware failure occurs.
Thanks -- I discovered the problem. It doesn't seem to work when used with a Mac, even when used with a windows VM on a mac. For some reason, the only way to get it to work was to use a pure-Windows machine.

This is a bit inconvenient, but I suppose for an occasional firmware update it's manageable. But hopefully future versions will work properly on Mac.

Need detailed instructions for installing firmware on a MAC

Got jetbook a couple of days ago. Already having all sorts of problems with it.
1. When I try to "eject" it from my MAC, it comes back and does not eject!!!! I know it is not my computer as I use external drives on a daily basis and they eject without a problem. This is just weird and extremely annoying. I have to "reeject it" many times and then disconnect it very quickly before it appears back on the file manager!

2. Since I have large pdf files (a few MB) I bought and SD 2GB card right away. The jetbook sees the SD card, but it does not see the files on it!!!! Extremely frustrating!

3. Now, I want to install the new firmware and find that there are not instructions for installing it on a MAC.

I am not computer illiterate, I never had a problem downloading or installing anything. But, please, provide some guidance for installing the firmware on a MAC. That was the reason why I bought this reader!

Already thinking about returning it...

A post on a different topic here says the Ectaco customer support has dramatically improved since Jerry was let loose on the forum or something...I can totally agree with that sentiment! Well done Jerry!! To be fair to Ectaco,I must say that my replacement jetBook Lite was sent promptly with no dramas or whatever. This new one has the 016 firmware, and for whatever reason it is just much better than the old one. Everything is much faster, opening things, shutdown, everything is much better. The only thing I'm wondering now is...do you have to keep updating this firmware thing every time there's a new version or something? Or can you just keep using it like this? The reason I want to know is that I still haven't actually learned why my old one just stopped working after being perfect for 5 months...was it to do with updating firmware or something else? Will this same thing happen again in a couple of months? Does the device stop if you don't update the firmware? Sorry,I'm very untechnical!!

Hello
it's my fist time in this forum and I hope you understand my very very poor written english!
I try to update the firmware of my jetbook (a great product until, 2-3 weeks ago, it starts to freeze with the lcd screen blocked). I follow the instructions in the forum and in the ectaco site, but I've the same thing: the reader stands in the "JETBOOK by €ctaco www.ectaco.com" logo and there is no way to go ahead. I try to press the power button and in the same time to press the right arrow, for 5 sec, for 20 sec and for 2 minutes (I must release the buttons because I was not able to keep press for more time!). I've the 33 version of firmware.
I made this step:
1) take a sd card and format it (in a HP notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64) in the FAT file system
2) Download the latest firmware from ectaco (35m: today the firmware file exe contains the directory DATA and REFLASH_NOR, the file zip downloaded yesterday doesn't contain these folders).
3) exctract all the folders and copy them in the root of sd card
4) put the cd card into the reader
5) press reset button: the reader switch of very very slowly
6) press in the same time the power button and the right arrow key, in very very several ways: first the power, first the arrow key, in the same time, for a time from 2 second to 2 minutes. I release the buttons when the logo "JETBOOK" appears, some times after some seconds.
7) the reader switch on but is stands blocked in the "JETBOOK" logo page: I wait also an hour if something changes, but the reader stands blocked and it is not swiched off. The only way to "give a kick" to the reader is press the reset button.

I don't know what I can do at this moment: at this moment I can use the reader for 8-9 minutes and after this time, the lcd screen freeze and it's impossible to use anymore, so I hope in the new firmware.
If you want, I create a video where you can see anything and I'll post it in youtube, so you can undestand well my situation.
regards and thanks for your patience.
alessandro - SL JB-519544 from italy
