Hello,

I own a Jetbook Color
Platform revision 41.35.509
r842 Spanish 839

I tried to update it using
http://images.jetbook.net/upgrade/jbc/r1128-en-sp.exe
I get the 2 files
I put jbcupdate-os.bin file in the card
I rename it to jbcupdate.bin

I press 5 seconds the RESET button
and I get the following message

Update failed write error at 0:30317064

$ md5 jbcupdate-os.bin
MD5 (jbcupdate-os.bin) = d923e8b357804e4c2c7d970a0736c37a

$ md5 jbcupdate.bin
MD5 (jbcupdate.bin) = b1d42604b91f4077d900fe81d0be9ca3

Please help me

Hi Sebastien,

Thanks for the message and sorry to hear about the difficulty. Lets try some preliminary troubleshooting.

1) First i would try and re-download the file in case it became corrupt in the download.
2) Make sure the micro SD card you are using is 2GB or more and formatted (FAT or FAT32)
3) Be sure that the only thing on the SD card is the 'jbcupdate-os.bin' which you have renamed to 'jbcupdate.bin'

Let me know if that helps!

Hi Jerry,

1)
I ever downloaded the file 2 times

The first time there was 2 differents files
The second time the 2 files was bundled in an exe file (not very convenient for Mac OS X user
but I also have Windows)

Could you calculate md5 checksum of the 2 files (in order to compare with my 2 files) ?

2)
The micro SD card is 16GB...
It's new (FAT32 formatted)...

3)
no other files or directories
just jbcupdate-os.bin renamed to jbcupdate.bin

I Extract it.
I calculate the md5, I get same value.
I copy, rename...
and I get exactly the same problem

I've just checked my two downloaded files (r1128 Spanish) and they have the same MD5 checksums as yours, so the files aren't the problem. It sounds like the jetBook is erroring on writing to the flash memory - not good. Have you tried turning it off completely, leaving it for a bit then turning back on again? It probably won't help but you never know.

As the OS update doesn't work for me
I wonder if I can first apply the firmware update and after apply the OS update.
I'm waiting for Ectaco support about it... because I don't want to make JBC a brick

Having the write error during the update process suggests to me that you
might want to try formatting the internal memory.

You would first copy everything off the internal memory into a folder on
your PC. You should then be able to return your JBC to its original
condition by just copying it back. (Just doing that might get around
the part of your memory that caused the error.)

I don't yet have a JBC to play with and don't know how you would access
any built in low level utilities the manufacturer may have left on the device.
There should be some procedure to restore the factory defaults on the
device. Even without those your PC should be able to format the "drive"
that it assumes the FAT partition of the internal memory is.

If you use your Windows PC to do the formatting you should also check the
boxes for repairing any problems with the file structure and memory/disk
surface.

Once that is done you would try the update again and hopefully it won't have
any problem writing to the JBC.

Luck;
Ken

P.S. You might have to copy back the original internal memory contents
before the update. (I would try to do it without the original contents first
and if that didn't work then try it with the original files restored.)

There should be other files on your internal memory in addition to the ebooks it shipped with.
You would want to save the internal memory, in its original file structure, to a folder on your PC.

In following the process I posted earlier you would have no SD card in your JBC.

If you can restore factory settings, you should do so after formatting the internal memory and
before trying the update again.

The jetBook Color doesn't expose the whole internal file system via USB - only a My Books folder (and My Pictures now as well I think). You don't get to see all the system files.

hmm... Interesting, is that true with your PC's explorer set to allow you to see system and hidden files?
Do you get a Drive letter for the internal memory, when you connect with the USB cable? (And have no
SD card in the device.)

If there is a "drive" letter can you right-click on it and have options to format the drive?

Well I guess the answer was no.

I expect that when you connect the USB cable and see the device in XP it has no "Drive" letter
and "Properties" list the file system as "Generic Hierarchical", is that correct?

Perhaps Ectaco could let us know if we are dealing with "MTPFS" or some other file structure?

That's not as easy as I thought...
Ectaco support (Paul Feofanov) said me to ask their NY office.

According to Abe Khan I have to pay (at my post office) to send the unit to their office
and I also have to pay 35$ for shipping from US to France.

Combined with the fact that I ever paid 100 euros for customs... that's a very
expensive ebook reader !!! (which is not fully usable)...

it's not a very good way of looking at "early adopters"

I'm not responsible of the problem... with other company (Apple for example)
the company send you a box where you put the damaged device... and you
pay nothing because they know that it's their fault (and consummer doesn't have
to pay because of device constructor mistake.

I also would like to notice that there is in fact 3 problems that happened gradualy :

1st pb:
the wireless connection was always on and there was no way to swiched it off

2nd pb:
the OS update couldn't be done

3rd pb:
the power supply stopped to charge the unit.

In the begining of the problem I didn't want to write this publicly... but now
if a more "customer friendly" solution is not given I will go ahead...
