I have recieved a B3 English/Spanish translator whith my order for a EF900 delux the other day. I have a problem with the B3 in that it will only start up in demo mode. I have spoken to an Ectaco tech guy this afternoon (here in France that is) and he suggested that I remove the batteries for 15 minutes or so, which I did for about an hour as a neighbour arrived.

It is still starting up with the demo and it does the same if I start it with no memory card in. I am not sure if this is normal, but to me it would appear that it is not reckognising the card?

Also, the USB connector is different to any others that I have seen? Where can I get a USB cable to fit?

Hey John,

I know you called yesterday and spoke to the tech support about this, just wanted to make sure everything worked out OK. Have a great day!

Hi Jerry, unfortunately I posted this after I had spoken to your tech department. I still have the same problem.

As I said originally, it seems as if it is not recognising that there is a card present?

Is it possible to put the card from my 900 into the B3 and try it? I must say that I haven't tried to do that, because I would be worried about damaging the data content on the 900 card!

I do have other SD cards that I could try if that is also possible. Although they wouldn't have any compatible software would they?

I have just had a though and wondered if the B3 SD card content would help?

Hey,

I might have to consult with the technical team about it.

I do know the P900 SD card would not work in the phrasebook. I know the unit is supposed to come with one language on it and others are available for download for free here https://www.ectaco.com/info/pb-b3-files/ and the instructions to download other languages are here https://www.ectaco.com/info/pb-b3-instr/

Not sure how much help that info will be so i will just wait on a response from them and let you know. Thanks!

Hey John,

I received a reply this morning about everything. They said the common cause for this could be corruption of the files on the MMC card in the device.

Please do the following:
1) Download the English-French software at this link https://www.ectaco.com/pbfiles/english/English-French.zip
2) Save the file to your MAC or PC.
3) Insert the MMC card into the card reader on your MAC or PC.
4) Unpack the contents onto the Root of the SD card. (the files will be BACKUP, VIRTUAL and 7 files).
5) Put the card back into the B-3
6) Perform a hard reset (hold down the on/off button and the reset button at the same time for a few seconds)

Hope this helps!

After several calls to the tech help center and at least 3 promises of new memory cards sent one of those cards finally arrived today. I have tried it in the B3 and it still does not work! There is no difference and it will still only power up in the demo mode and request to be plugged in via a USB cable?

Thinking back that I recieved the unit at the end of March and it now the middle of August, 5 months, I am now less than happy!

Please! Can someone sort out this problem? It seems to me that I have a Friday afternoon model where someone on quality control was in a hurry to get away!

All I want is a unit that works After the excelent service I had when I ordered and received the EF900 I am really surprised!

If I need to return this jar of worms and have it replaced then so be it. If it stays like this then I may as well just put it in the bin?

Hi,

Thanks for the message. Please contact the technical service department at 718-728-3605 or email ABE@ectaco.com

Unfortunately i do not believe the free items are covered under the warranty but the tech team would have to double check for you. Thanks!

Hi Jerry, I have to admit that so far the non coverage of a warrenty has been that your people have so far sent 3 replacement memory cards for the B3 of which I have recieved the last one. The other 2 have disapeared into the either? This has been a very good service for something that has not been covered by your warranty.

SO? As all this has been tried I would think that it would be a backward step if you now decided that such a simple problem as a """freebe"""" that helped to entice anyone into buying your product and that does has never worked would stop you from trying to sort the problem of said Ectaco product?

After all, the main product bought, the EF900, is for me, a great product and as a resident of France has helped me countless times and has impressed a boat load of friends, both British and French.

If you wish me to return the B3 I will do so at my expense? All I wish is to have a working B3 This one I have is buggered!
