Hi Jerry/Val;

I'm going to Vietnam soon, where I'll meet people with limited-to-no English ability. I've been comparing your iTRAVL NTL-2V, -14AS, and the Partner EV900. An important feature for me, is bi-directional speech recognition. I foresee using the Pre-recorded Phrase Book heavily, and I want to have the ability to use English Speech Recognition for phrase searching, AND for a Vietnamese speaker to access the Vietnamese phrase by Speech Recognition, as well. Am I correct that the S-R feature is only for the 14,000 Audio Phrase Book entries? Or does it also apply to dictionary entries? English AND Vietnamese dictionary entries? From what I can determine, the -14AS does not support Vietnamese Speech Recognition, but the dedicated -2V does? Is the difference between the two models just a different SD Card? Are the SD cards model-specific, or will they work in iTRAVL and Pertner?

What about the Partner EV900? A Chicago area authorized dealers is offering one online, but his description lists only English Speech Recognition, while your website lists English and Vietnamese Speech Recognition; again, just for the 14,000 Phrase Book entries?

Are the iTRAVL and Partner equally featured for language learning (my other high-priority); for me learning Vietnamese, and for a Vietnamese speaker learning English? Are the interfaces just in English, or are they switchable between both languages?

Sorry for the questions overload, but I want to make an intelligent purchase. Upgrades and possible expansion are also considerations. Thanks for any clarification, advice and/or recommendations you can provide.

Hey,

Thanks for the question and i would be glad to help you with picking out the right model!

If you just need Vietnamese i would recommend sticking to one of the devices with just Vietnamese on it rather then a multilingual model. I would focus on the iTravl NTL-2V as well as the Partner EV900. Both models have speech recognition in both directions. You are correct with the phrase database. You or the Vietnamese can speak one of the 14,000 phrases in the database for an instant, vocal translation.

The SD cards are not interchangeable between the iTravl and the Partner 900.

The features between the iTravl and the Partner 900 are very similar, the Partner 900 has a few more features and is easier to use because of the keyboard. That's also why its a bit more expensive.

Also i highly recommend getting the item straight from us, if the dealers description does not have SR for Vietnamese they may have an old model with old firmware (could have been sitting in their warehouse for up to a year).

If you decide to get one or if you have a few more questions please feel free to call me directly. I will send you a Personal Message (PM) with my contact info, or you can email me at Jerry@ectaco.com. Thanks!
