Thanks, but I can't get the BETA download to work. Keep getting a screen saying that it "failed". Waiting for the official release now.

Some features that have been lost:

The zoom key does not display a zoom ratio selection menu. Instead, it increases the zoom ratio. This is specially annoying for PDFs.

Before, you could scroll in small steps by pressing and holding the arrow keys. This was useful, for instance, to see a formula that was splitted in the middle of the page. It was a VERY useful feature for reading PDFs, but now this feature is gone ...

Before, pressing OK during PDF viewing, got you a 4 or 9 grid zoom. Now, this feature is gone. I found it very useful.

I'm not completely sure about this, but PDF page turning (and also left/right scrolling) seems to be slower than before.

Finally, PDF reflowing is VERY useful, thanks for including it. But please, do not add this feature and remove others. It makes no sense ...

BTW, having a free zoom ratio (not just the values allowed in the zoom menu) would be very practical for reading pdfs. Several other people have already mentioned this.

Hi,

I installed the beta on my JBL Saturday night. There was no problem installing it per instructions. The device was recognized as a device right away from my laptop. I was able to transfer a drm epub book I bought directly from a publisher. It was a little slow to transfer, from there it became a little iffy, but I was able to get it to work.

Iffy meaning, adobe said it was done transferring...it wasn't. Hooked it back up and waited a bit longer transfer was okay/complete. (could be something on my side of things?).

When I went to open the ebook, JBL froze at the main menu page, with the ebook option highlighted. It simply would not go any farther, no matter how long I left it. (15-20 minutes)

I finally just reset the JBL, let it turn off. Restarted in a few minutes was able to get into the various menus.

To my delight I was able to open the drm epub book (not from BN) and have been reading it the past couple of days as I have time.

So far no problems, but I

Okay, back again.

I opened a pdb-drm book that I bought from fictionwise. I've read the book many times on JBL, before updating to the beta, so I know there should be no issues with the book.

Now: The book opens no problem. It opens at font 18, a bit small sometimes. When I go to zoom - the menu does pop up, unlike for the epub-drm book.

Problem: Will not go to any other font size. I've tried them all. What it does is kick you back to the main menu again with the eBook menu highlighted. You can click on it again and it'll take you right back to you book lists etc...and no problem from there.

I can still read the book at font 18, but I can't change the font size. I can jump to different page numbers no problem. I've tried this with about 15 books and sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't. All of the books I've tried I've read on the JBL pre-beta with no problems all bought from FW on various dates. One book wouldn't even open and kicked me back to the main

This was the easiest update, for me. With Adobe DRM books, though, it gives me the opportunity to input the unlock stuff, but after whirring along, tells me that it cannot open the book.

I've tried it on a couple of different books and I get the same info each time.

Hey,

Thanks for the feedback, i am making notes every time someone suggests something new!

Thanks. I read a lot of PDFs on the JBL, so here you have some suggestions:

- The scroll in smalls steps (pressing and holding the arrow keys) has disappeared in version 16b (but it was present in version 16). It would be nice if you put it back (same with the grid zoom).

- Having a free zoom ratio (say 215% or whatever) would help to adjust exactly a pdf document width to the width of two screens width (or three screens-width or whatever is needed in order to make the fonts big enough).

- In order to read most pdf articles, you have to scroll left and right constantly. This cannot be avoided due to the size of the screen. However, it would help if button 0 was assigned to right-scroll and button 9 to left scroll. Buttons 0 to 9 are softer to press whereas the arrow keys are too hard (I get thumb-pain after reading a long pdf article ).

Just to let Ectaco know the new firmware has no effect on the text quiver that is present on some JBLs (like mine). Otherwise the firmware works fine.

thanks for staying on top of the unit and trying to make it better and better.

Problem: I attempted to use the dictionary feature, and the JBL froze for 2-3 minutes. I backed out of the book and went back in at same page, I was able to use the dictionary and look up random words.

Hey,

Ok so with PDB books from fictionwise you get this response.
1) They open. When you select a font other then 18 it brings you back to the main menu.
2) OR it does not open at all, just brings you back to the main menu when you click on on them?

Is that correct?

I though the Name and CC input was only for B&N DRM not ADE DRM. Is this true? If so i'm not sure what info you would have to put in if they are in fact ADE DRM books.

I'm not sure if i am familiar with this issue. Is it that the screen shakes a bit? Maybe it is more a hardware issue then software? Please let me know!

Hi,

Yes the above points are correct - what I have experienced.

Thanks for the response. I'll continue to play around as I have time I really like the JBL!

I tried opening an Adobe DRM book again, and yes, I get a request for name and CC and after entering same, I get an error message.

Barnes and Noble format returns me to the menu screen [Books, Pictures, Settings] where I again choose 'books' and go through the process to get back to the book area.

I'm still investigating, but it also seems that Adobe ADE books (non-DRM) are no longer accessible on my JBL. It might be that I have reformatted then re-added books to my JBL enough that some internal counter has flipped and I can no longer add them to the JBL. Adobe has been contacted but aren't very good about responding with anything more than 'check our forum'; which has been more frustrating than helpful. If anyone else has been running across this issue, a little guidance would be appreciated rather than reinventing the proverbial wheel. I will continue as I have time; if I figure it out, I'll post it here.

Last, have found on some books that as I'm reading along text going from one page to the next doesn't make sense. If I opt to a smaller font then the missing sentences are there, as though one should have had to scroll down as one does with some of the PDF stuff. Am I explaining this well enough? It's been three different books so far, and none of them are the cheaply done ones, either. The last one I noticed is a Bantam Books publication.

I still love my JBL; plan on taking it on vacation with me at the end of the month.

The Name & CC unlocking is for the B&N epub or the Secure eReader pdb
formated ebooks. The issue that has been a problem for most with the
B&N epub unlocking is that both the name and the CC number must be
entered with NO spaces.

The issue with missing words at the page turn, was a problem that
appeared with .pdb files, for awhile, and was corrected with a firmware
update. If it has returned with the latest update (0.16b) then I haven't
noticed it. Check again and let us know.

There would be no such thing as "Adobe ADE books (non-DRM)", if you
mean non-DRM .epub files that you are letting ADE manage for you,
that might be the problem. You could try adding the book without using
ADE.

Luck;
Ken

B&N books do not ask for any information; clicking on one of their formats just boots me to the menu. It seems that all Adobe books now go to the ADE file rather than having the .epub options(?) I'll play with it some more, see if I can get it to individualize. (Windows 7 is such an obstreperous O/S).

The missing words at page turn is definitely back, if it was an issue before, and the book to which I refer is PDB format.

Thanks to you all who are on top of this update. It is going to be fabulous when it all comes together.
