I would have thought they would have sent me something with the hardware issue resolved once and for all. You cannot reload firmware because it freezes on the very first screen. The activity LED does not blink indicating activity- it comes on solid. I have bought 3 of these for gifts and I think I can expect the same from all.

The regular boot routine is interupted by the key sequence to start the firmware update,
(the on/off and right arrow after a reset). In other words it's before the "first screen".

The same thing for the Diagnostic Screen, try this:

To enter the diagnostics screen:
Reset the device.
Then hold down three buttons. They are: "on/off" "zoom" and "menu".
When you see the jetBook screen let go of "on.off".
Keep holding the "zoom" and "menu" keys until you see a 16 item screen.
It's tricky, so it may take a couple of tries.

While you are there you might try #7 Restore Factory Defaults.

Well I know in both my cases Ken, It froze at the jetbook lite logo screen and it was NOT possible to get to the firmware reload screen. After trying at LEAST 30 or 40 times to do this I can pretty much say this with assurance. Also as someone else mentioned with the existing problem, windows does not see the device as a valid usb device. I WAS able to load firmware in all cases except these 2 cases so its not like I didn't understand the process. When the jbl freezes up as mentioned its pretty much a paperweight. If its less than 1% chance then having it happen 2 times to same person should be 1 in 10,000 chance. Of course it happened to me 2 times and ronoue 2 times so I more and more think the less than 1% chance is a fairy tale. I know ectaco tech support has lied to me several times about it so far. Why should they stop now.

If you are seeing the Jetbook logo screen then there is every reason to believe that
you can restore the device. Some of the postings are of those who came to feel that
the effort was beyond them or more than they felt they should be asked to do, and
they did not even try the procedures I have described. Some just had problems
with the key sequence.

So, again it would be nice to know if you can get into the Diagnostic Screen, using
the procedure I posted above?

The PC recognition of the JBL as a USB device is a separate issue, and the USB
cable should not be a part of the user repair until later in the Diagnostic process.

Well I no longer have the locked up jbl. However at the time I had both of them, I tried EVERY procedure anyone on this forum or on mobileforums or anywhere else I could find and none of them worked. Its not that I WANTED to pay to return my jbl for replacement twice, its that nobody found ANYTHING else that worked at the time. Yes I held the power on key and the right arrow key for up to 30 minutes when trying to start it up. It never went to anything except the jbl logo screen. I tried taking out batteries, replacing batteries with new alkaline batteries, leaving batteries out overnight, tried EVERY method suggested. None of them worked either time the jbl froze up on me. So since ectaco seems unable or unwilling to fix this defect and my jbl is no longer under warranty I just stopped using the jbl except on rare occasions. There are other ereaders that ARE reliable.
