I have had my Ectaco Jetbook for about a week and a half. i downloaded an ebook (title: wasted) from a site called ebooks.com and it is DRM protected and required me to download adobe digital editions to even view it. when trying to transfer the book to my ereader as detailed in the owners manual of the device following all instructions, i successfully xfer the book from pc to device then when i disconnect to read i get a "Failed to open the file" message. to test it ive created a .txt file and xfered and no problem comes up fine. I was under the impression that the device read pdf so i did xfer my tax return info that was saved in pdf format..

Unfortunately, current version of Jetbook does not support DRM. We were working on updates for Jetbook, but it is unknown yet when they will be available.

Current version of Jetbook-Lite supports DRM files.

Ectaco INC,

From what I understand the Jetbook-Lite only supports the obsoleted PDB format for DRM files. Is that incorrect?

That's correct. DRM pdb from ereader.com or fictionwise.com (and previously Barnes and Noble) will work with the jetBook Lite. But DRM ePub, whether it is Adobe Digital Editions DRM ePub or Barnes & Noble DRM ePub, will not. Unfortunately Barnes and Noble seems to be phasing out pdb ebooks. Even ebooks that I had previously bought and downloaded as pdb files can now only be downloaded as ePub format as I recently found out.

Most libraries that offer lending of ebooks use Adobe DRM ePub, so those won't work in the JBL either - until ADE ePub DRM is supported.

I'm waiting to see if JBL adds ePub DRM before committing to buy. If JBL DRM is released before the Nook 2 rumored to have the enhanced e-ink display I'll get a JBL. (http://gizmodo.com/5522088/a-peek-at-the-next-kindle-and-nook-display) If the nook 2 comes out first then all bets are off.

In October Adobe and Barnes and Noble announced a partnership. The BN books are on an Adobe base but they are developing the protected side of it. As far as I can tell it still isn't part of ADE but it will be in what Adobe calls the "next major release" whatever that means. I got the following from Adobe's announcement at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/digitalpublishing/barnes_noble_faq.html. personally I would prefer if they would work on that. Then it would do everything I would want.
Adobe Reader Mobile SDK with social content protection capabilities is expected to be available globally in early 2010. Adobe Digital Editions and Adobe Content Server with social content protection capabilities are expected to be available globally in late 2010. To learn more about Adobe’s eBook platform, visit www.adobe.com/products/contentserver.

Please, check www.ereader.com and www.fictionwise.com.

Those web-sites provides with plenty of DRM PDB books.
