I got my jetBook Lite for Christmas. I have not changed its firmware from 14i. I have not added any books to what came included with it. I have not even plugged it into my computer.

Last night as I was reading The Triumphs of Eugene Valmont it froze up on me. It would not page advance, return to the files or turn off.

The night before I had changed the batteries. With the problem, I first removed the batteries and reinserted them. Then I changed the batteries again.

Upon removing the batteries, the device shuts off. It will now power on, but will not progress past the boot-up screen.

Any suggestions before I return it for an exchange?

It may just be an act of desperation, but here's my two cents worth.

Take the batteries out, LEAVE THEM OUT OVERNIGHT.

Put the batteries back in.

Turn it on.

Use the RESET button on the back, you'll need something small like a toothpick. You don't have to press hard.

This will likely NOT work, but it is at least one more thing to try. If it's out of warranty you could also try upgrading the firmware, though it sounds like a hardware issue.

If life is a novel, am I a chapter or a footnote?

Nothing seemed to work, so I shipped the device back to Ectaco this morning.

We'll see if they fix it or replace it.

Katie

It will not turn on at all? Will it light up enough to load the latest firmware?

Bummer. F&Z is a wonderful book.

Same problem here. Only I've managed to go for about 6 months without any trouble. Today, it completely froze, won't go beyond the boot-up screen. tried reset-nothing. And when I connect the reader to my computer via usb, the computer doesn't recognize the device so there's nothing I can do basically. Could use some advice.

I have exactly the same problem,it's lasted for about 5 months until today it won't go past the boot-up screen. When plugged into pc via USB the device is not recognised now,so how can I tell what firmware it has? I assume it has the latest version because it was bought after 11 Jan 2010 which is the date of the latest firmware update on that page. Someone else here said that the problem is the same with the update anyway,so what else is there to try?
I've emailed Ectaco support with different questions several times and never got one reply yet...let's see if anyone bothers with this one...yawn...

Me too !

Same problem, my JetBook Lite won't go beyond the initial screen.

I have tried a reset, batteries out reset, new batteries and even attempted the special "install firmware" startup - no effect.

I got my JBL six months back on December 31st and I am still on firmware v0.14n (which I wrote down when it was still working !).

I was unable to update the firmware because of Windows problems (silly message about nested too deep) when trying to copy the update files to a SD card. Since I haven't a stand alone card reader I certainly can't do it now.

Suggestions ?

I am in England (bought by mail order from Fictionwise) - can I get support or do a RMA locally ?

This is starting to be really annoying. If many people have the same problem, which is apparently the manufacturer's screw-up and they bill you for fixing it, then smb should seriously sue these guys.

I had my Ectaco for 2 months and now it's frozen on first screen - exactly as described in this thread. I am not sure if it's worth the time an money to even get RMA replacement. If the reader works for only 2 months? What's the point? Ectaco, is there a fix in the works at all?
